ENGLISH LITERARY SOCIETY 2019-2020

The first event of the English Literary Society of this session was a movie screening of Charles Dicken's evergreen novel 'Oliver Twist' on 2nd November, 2019. Apart from the Sem V English Discipline studentswho have the novel in their prescribed syllabus, the movie was also enjoyed by students from other streams. 
Various programmes are being held in the college this year to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. His teachings and  vision of modern India have inspired every Indian in one way or the other, but the present generation often finds it old school. 

Considering this scenario English Literary Society in collaboration with Athena- The Expression Society of P.G.D.A.V(E) College held an inter-departmental conventional debate competition on 5th November 2019. The motion for the debate was - THBT in this modern era of materialism, Gandhian ideology is lost in our generation.

The event witnessed a healthy participation by students of varied departments. The house was delighted with the address of Dr. R.K Gupta, Principal of PG.DAV(E).He enlightened the values and ethics of Integrity, Non- violence and Satyagraha which Gandhi ji preachead and his desire for the better India. The event also marked a warm presence of Ms. Priyanka Chatterjee, Convenor- Athena an Co-ordinator of the English Literary Society and Ms. Sangeeta Sharma, In-charge (English Department). 

The announcement of post bearers of Athena society also took place. Sachin Mehlawat and Kamya Wahal were appointed as President and Vice President respectively. Secretary, Joint Secretary and Treasurer were appointed to Chehek Mishra, Pratyush Singh and Mridul Makker respectively.

The competition was healthy and judged  by the jury namely Dr. Mita Bhatnagar, Mr. Anil Swadesi and Dr. Vipin Pratap.

Judges announced Adarsh Singh as Best Speaker (Against), Lakshita Makker as Best Speaker (or) and Astha Negi was given a Special Mention and Best Interjector award, they all received cash and kind prizes. 


The event ended on an optimistic note and with a vote of thanks by Vice President of Athena, Kamya Wahal.

Debate Competition

A debate competition  on the topic “Social Media: Boon or Bane” was organised under the aegis of the English Literary Society of the PGDAV College (Evening) on 05.10.2018 at 3:30 PM in the Seminar Hall. The enthusiasm in the participants and also  in the student volunteers was clearly discernible in their eloquence.The event was anchored by Yashwashini and Rohit.
The event was judged by Mr. Jaspal Singh and Mr. Anil Kumar Swadeshi. Ms. Renuka Dhar Bazaz, Convenor of the the English Literary Society, thanked the participants and appreciated their enthusiasm, eloquence and thought-provoking ideas.In her address ,she deliberated upon social media as a boon by giving example of Twitter, Facebook etc., that how a social platform like Twitter plays an important role in connecting common people to the government and its schemes and their grievances are  now  easily addressed  through this platform.
Mr. Jaspal Singh motivated the participants through his inspiring words. He advised the participants to take both the sides of the debate into account while preparing for the speech and instructed to be careful about  keeping body language, eye-contact and time factor and also to use latest examples.
Dr.R.K Gupta, Principal of the College also graced the occasion.He distributed prizes to the winners and congratulated them. Dr. Gupta, in his address to the students emphasised on the critical and analytical mind and how one needs to think in order to speak.
The first prize was bagged by Sachin, BA (Programme )2nd year student. Kamya Wahi, Bcom (Hons) 2nd year ,got the second prize.And the third prize was  won by Trisha Chugh, BA (Programme) 2nd Year student.
Jeremy ,BA (Programme) 2nd year, got prize for best interjector ,Rohit BA(Programme) 2nd year got prize for good interjection,  and  Khushi Garg got the prize for best reply to interjection.

 The event was also attended by faculties of the Department of English ,Ms Priyanka Chatterjee, Amit Kumar Bhagat and Niroj Kumar Sethi .

English Literary Society 2017-18

·         The English Literary Society of the college organized a debate on the topic “Hindi or English: Link Language in India” and creative writing competition on the theme “Indian Cinema” for 1st semester students on 22nd August, 2017 which saw a participation of over 30 students. The winners were given prizes by the Principal.
·         The ELS arranged for a movie screening based on Charles Dickens novel “Oliver Twist”, which is part of the course curricula for BA Third Semester English Discipline on 1st November, 2017.
·         The ELS arranged for a movie screening based on “Merchant of Venice” a play by William Shakespeare, which is part of the course curricula for BA Third Semester English Discipline on 14th November, 2017.
·         As part of the 60th year celebrations of the college, the ELS organized a Talk on the topic “Dayanand Saraswati’s Philosophy of Women Empowerment” delivered by eminent speaker Dr. Devender Singh from Dr. Ambedkar International Centre, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India on 22nd March, 2018. It was well attended by faculty members and students of the college.
